Saboteur: The Duel – 2nd Star to the Left Review

Dwarves working against each other down in the tunnels, battling trolls and cave-ins, to grab the most gold? We’re in.  Wandering about PAX East, we were immediately drawn to the artwork of Mayfair Games’ Saboteur: The Duel.  The two previous incarnations of the Saboteur title looked intriguing but The Duel was the two player version making it much more likely that it would get to the table.  The Duel is a quick playing, tile (card) placement, hand management game that had us laughing as we threw trolls and rock slides in each other’s path.

Weekend Wishlist

What games are you looking to bring to the table this weekend?  I know that we always seem to plan way more than we manage to play.  Much to our collective dismay, life sometimes happens.

This weekend we’re definitely hoping for another round of The Bloody Inn.  After that the list includes Pandemic, Orleans and a bit of Dominion.

You’re off for a vacation – maybe a quick weekend getaway, maybe something a bit more exotic – and you begin your important list making, load up the Kindle, charge up the phone and think about what games you are going to bring.  The trouble is that most of your favorites are way too large to bring along.  Others are smaller but still have lots of little pieces that you’d rather not leave in a hotel somewhere.  There are a few travel versions of classics but that might not be what you’re in the mood for. So, fellow gamers, what are your favorite games to bring along on a trip?  And do you have a clever way to pack multiple games in one box?

It’s TINY!  And most definitely EPIC!  Just look how much goodness is packed into one small package.  Our love for  Tiny Epic Heroes and Tiny Epic Defenders knows no bounds so when Tiny Epic Galaxies hit kickstarter we were backers immediately and dreaming of colonizing small planets everywhere in the universe.  After stalking patiently waiting for the delivery person, we dove right in.  We were fans at first play. IMG_20160123_143836 Continue reading →

Welcome to Second Star to the Left.  A place for book reviews, board game reviews, bullet journaling info, general ramblings, thinks and thoughts. Grab a cuppa tea and jump on in.

Yes, I realize that the directions should be second star to the right, but getting lost is half the fun and there’s more to see along the scenic route (or at least that’s my excuse for being directionally challenged and I’m sticking to it!) Along the way, I am going to write of what I love and I tend to be an enthusiastic fan of those things that inspire happiness in my day to day existence.

Second Star to the Left is always looking for contributors for content –  book or board game reviews, great photos of games, etc.  I’d love to see them.

Book reviews don’t require much explanation.  They often involve some debate and a lot of fun discussion though so feel free to hop in and join the conversation.  Also, please check the link pages for Goodreads and Instagram links. Board game reviews are a little trickier so we’ve come up with the following method:

2nd – Is it a good two player game? I’ll review all types of games but we are always on the lookout for solid two player games.

S – set up and take down (including instruction clarity)

T – tactile appeal (quality and appeal of pieces) Love those meeples!

A – actions (mechanics and overall play)

R – replay (will it lose its appeal over time?)

Since we’re now looking at a Blizzard Warning for the weekend I’m looking forward to being snowed in with a warm cup of tea, some good books, good games and good movies.
