You’re off for a vacation – maybe a quick weekend getaway, maybe something a bit more exotic – and you begin your important list making, load up the Kindle, charge up the phone and think about what games you are going to bring. The trouble is that most of your favorites are way too large to bring along. Others are smaller but still have lots of little pieces that you’d rather not leave in a hotel somewhere. There are a few travel versions of classics but that might not be what you’re in the mood for. So, fellow gamers, what are your favorite games to bring along on a trip? And do you have a clever way to pack multiple games in one box?
I would definitely vote for any of the Tiny Epic series’ games. Lots of punch in a small box. Tiny Epic Galaxies would be great to bring along. Loot Letter is another big game in a small package.
We often include small dice games like Zombie Dice but they tend to be games we play to kill time while waiting rather than something we’re thinking about for a good game session. (Don’t get me wrong. We really enjoy Zombie Dice!)
I’ve seen a few examples of people packing multiple games into one box to make travel more convenient and would love any links to ideas for that. Do you unbox your games to bring them without the bulky storage components?
We’ve often wished that The Duke had a fabric travel board that could be rolled up and stored in one of the pouches. We’re considering creating one of our own so that we can play any where.
One of the other things to consider is that we tend to imagine that we will have much more time to game than we ever do. Seems that there is never enough time for games!
So how do you game when you travel? Suggestions?
I agree, we almost always include one of the Tiny Epic games as a good option that doesn’t take up too much space. Hive is another good one if you only have two players. A fun favorite in our family is Guillotine, a fun card game with some strategy that plays fairly quickly. If we will have more time any of the Gloom series are good as well.
As for packing, for longer vacations (a week or more) we have a rubbermaid box, medium sized, that can fit one of the larger “square” board games as well as a number of smaller games and card games. We usually limit it to what will fit in this box, especially if camping, so the games are organized and protected from the elements.
